Stylized 1940s shoot | Maine Fashion and Couples Photographer

I’ve been wanting to do a 1940s shoot ever since I picked up a camera.  Growing up, I had a grandmother and a step-grandmother who were always buying me old movies.  Judy Garland became one of my favorites around age seven when I received Meet Me in St. Louis.  It’s still my favorite movie of all time, and if you haven’t seen it, you should.  It’s not set in the 40s, but it was filmed in the 40s.  To me, the 1940s epitomize glamor and romance, so I really wanted to try to recreate that.

You may recognize Stephanie.  I shot a Valentine’s Day-themed shoot with her back in the bitter winter (she’s the girl with the balloons in the slide show at the top of my page!).  Aaron is Stephanie’s best friend, and I thought the two of them would be perfect together.  It doesn’t hurt that they both look like Vogue models.

I have to give Aaron a big shout out too.  Not only did he do Steph’s hair and makeup, but he also raided his grandfather’s closet for his wardrobe.  That’s one dedicated model!

Also, a big thanks to Amy Savage for lending us the suitcase, and to my mom, Susan, for the maroon shoes, pearls, and black veil!

These next shots posed quite the challenge for me.  I loved the first outfit so much, and because I was still living on summer hours, it got dark way too soon. By the time I had them change it was dusk and we were racing for light.  By the time we got to the library stairs, the sky was black.  I decided to push myself because I wanted shots in the second outfits!  So, I cranked up the ISO on my camera, and used the horrible yellow flourescent light provided by the surrounding lamp posts.  My camera could not autofocus in the darkness, so I had to manually focus all of these shots when I could barely see myself.  It was a little difficult, but we still got some good shots! The lighting in some of these gave a really great vintage look all on its own!

I love this shot above!Thank you, Steph and Aaron, for doing this shoot after months and months of talking about it!  Thank you, also, for knowing EXACTLY what look I was going for.:)

Also, a big thank you to my fiance, Joel, who rocked my reflector!
