I love shooting in the winter, but it’s so refreshing when spring finally rolls around. The air grows warm, and there are pops of color everywhere. Earlier this week, Aly and I decided to head out and soak up some springtime, and my husband, Joel, suggested his family’s apple orchard as a location. The trees were blooming, and apparently they don’t stay that way for long. He wouldn’t stop talking about them, so I knew we had to go.

With permission from his mom and grandfather, who was just as excited for me to shoot out there as I was (he had been out there photographing the trees earlier that day), we headed out. As we drove up, my jaw dropped. It was like entering The Secret Garden! We wandered around long enough for Joel’s grandfather to come make sure we were okay. ♥

For the month of May, I decided to take on a couple of family sessions. I get a lot of inquiries for them, and usually refer them to other photographers, but since I have family with young children (and a few wedding couples with babies on the way), I thought I’d offer them temporarily.

My first session was with my cousin and her family. We started shooting an hour earlier than I normally do so that we could avoid messing with nap/dinner time, and of course it decided to be the brightest day with not a cloud in the sky. The wind on the water was pretty intense as well, but we powered through it.

I’ve shared a lot more scenic shots lately, which is strange for me. This year, spring has really inspired me to get out and photograph my surroundings. Joel had several days off this week, so we took a trip to one of our favorite places. Bar Harbor. We grabbed coffee, strolled around town, had some lunch, and then I proceeded to beat him at two rounds of mini golf. We get pretty competitive, so I know the next one will likely go to him. Haha.

As a wedding and portrait photographer, I often forget to slow down and photograph for myself, so I made sure to bring my camera for a few scenic shots. I’m thinking about ordering prints of these and Portland Head Light!

Spring is one of my favorite seasons. It used to be second to fall, but now I’m reconsidering. It’s so refreshing when the air grows warmer, the trees fill in and the flowers bloom. This spring has been extra exciting for me because it’s our first spring in our new home, and every day we’re discovering new perennials popping up from the previous owner. I love it! So far, we have lots of daffodils and tulips. Today, I noticed for the first time the new pops of pink on a few of the trees in our backyard. They’re gorgeous! Here are a few shots I snapped. I hope you’re all enjoying spring as much as I am!

I decided to pick one senior rep for the class of 2014, and Kayla is her! She’ll be a senior in Brewer next year, but for now she’s working her butt off playing softball. For her mini session we shot around downtown Bangor on what was probably the coldest day of April! Brr… My fingers are numb just thinking about it!

It’s been a few weeks since I posted a Friday Favorites, so I thought I’d talk about a few things I’ve been loving lately!

1) “Pusher Love Girl” by Justin Timberlake -

It’s true, I’m late to the party. Truth be told, I was not a fan of “Suit & Tie” when it came out, so I was hesitant to even give JT’s new album a listen. However, my husband thought I’d be a fan, so he bought me the CD for Easter (yes, I still love having music on CD). It was a couple of weeks before I opened it, but I decided to give it a listen on a road trip. The album opens with “Pusher Love Girl” and I was instantly a fan of the old sound, and the beat. I’ve been listening to it on repeat and have barely made it past the first track…

2) Mad Men -

I’m even later to this party. I’m a huge fan of period film and television. I could watch Judy Garland or Keira Knightley movies all day. Downton Abbey? Ohhhhhh boy. However, I never gave Mad Men a chance because I thought that I’d get bored. I’m not exactly sure why… Maybe the advertising? Well, I was wrong. I decided to watch an episode on Netflix to see what the fuss was about and now I’m hooked. I’m even fascinated by the advertising! Who knew!? Plus, I really want Betty Draper’s entire wardrobe.

3) Call the Midwife -

Here’s another show I was unsure of. I kept reading about how Call the Midwife actually gets better ratings in the UK than Downton Abbey, and after seeing a preview during an episode of Downton, I decided to give it a try. It’s a show about a bunch of independent woman working as midwives in London’s East End in the 1950s. It’s pretty fascinating to see life through their eyes, even if it convinces me every week that I’ll never have children…  P.S. I LOVE the character Chummy!

4) Exploring Maine -

One of my favorite things about being a Maine photographer is the opportunity I’m given to travel to places I haven’t seen before. Maine has so many different gorgeous landscapes and I’m not even close to visiting them all! Yesterday, I was spending the day with two other Maine photographers and we decided to stop by Portland Head Light. I can’t believe that I had never seen it before. Everyone has seen it! It was a gorgeous day, and I’m so happy I got to see it finally.

Last September, Joel and I met Ashleigh and Edward for delicious dinner and drinks at 40 Paper in Camden (if you haven’t been, go!). Three hours later, Joel and I walked away thinking the same thing… They are both really great, interesting people. They’ve also experienced some amazing places. Ashleigh is from Australia, while Edward was born in Hong Kong and attended boarding school in England (yes, he has an accent!). Now, they find themselves together living in New York City, and planning a Maine destination wedding. We’ll be photographing their wedding this August at French’s Point in Stockton Springs, and we can’t wait!

While planning their engagement session, Ashleigh said she wanted to plan it for when the city’s cherry blossoms were in bloom, and I’m so happy that we did! They made for a stunning backdrop. Ashleigh and Edward were incredible hosts, and since Joel had never been to New York and I hadn’t in years, they turned our day of shooting into a day of shooting/dining/touring. It was wonderful. We shot in Grand Central Station, Central Park and the West Village just to name a few spots. We also stopped for some famous Magnolia Bakery cupcakes, which were featured on Sex and the City and were delicious! We ended with wine back at their apartment where hours of talk (wedding for the girls, film for the boys) rounded out the day.

Ashleigh and Edward, thanks for inviting us to the city and into your beautiful home! We can’t wait to see you in August!

I get quite a few inquiries for family portraits, and I’m always referring them to other photographers because, well, I currently focus on wedding, couples, and senior portrait photography (with a little fashion & beauty here and there). I always feel bad saying no, so I’ve decided that for the month of May ONLY I will be offering family sessions! I love photographing Emily. She has perfect porcelain skin and the biggest blue eyes, and she’s also incredibly fun to be around. I photographed her last fall when her hair was much shorter, and I have to say I’m pretty envious that she can pull off hair at any length. For this shoot, we visited a few different spots at the University of Maine on a perfect spring day. We also had some great laughs, which you’ll see evidence of in a few of these shots. ♥
